1️⃣1️⃣ Archaeological Museum and Biblioteca Marciana

On the side of St. Mark's Square, in the Procuratie Nuove, you'll find two treasures for history and culture enthusiasts.

Archaeological Museum:
Highlight: an impressive collection of Roman sculptures donated by Cardinal Grimani in the 16th century. You'll also see bronzes, ceramics, busts, and inscriptions.

Admission is via the Correr Museum – so you visit two museums with one ticket.

Biblioteca Marciana:
This Renaissance library, designed by Jacopo Sansovino, was built to house important book collections. The collection contains thousands of valuable works, including approximately 3,000 incunabula (books printed before 1501).

📍 Extra tip: Ideal for a quieter moment or on a rainy day. A side trip on our Venice itinerary.

1️⃣2️⃣ Museum Correr | Venice Walking Itinerary

Museum Correr Venice

Across from the basilica lies the impressive Museo Correr.

This museum originated from the collection of Teodoro Correr, a Venetian collector who bequeathed his estate to the city in 1830.

You'll find works by famous names such as the Bellini brothers, Vivarini, Carpaccio, El Greco, and even Hugo van der Goes.

Besides art, the museum also exhibits a wealth of information about the history of Venice: old maps, coins, documents, and everyday objects.

Continue: If you're standing with your back to the Museo Correr (official website), walk left under the gallery towards the basilica. Right next to the basilica is the Hotel Concordia, and next to it is a narrow alleyway you have to enter.

There's no street sign, but above eye level there is a white sign with an arrow: "Per Rialto". We continue our Venice route from St. Mark's Square.

Continue walking straight ahead. Pass the gift shops and the seemingly charming osterias. At the end, turn left and go through the alley underpass. Stay upright (and remember to follow the signs for "per Rialto").

It's busy with tourists here. In the alley, you can already catch a glimpse of the back of San Salvador Church. But follow the crowd towards the Rialto. You'll then arrive at the square "Campo S. Salvador," where the church entrance is also located.

1️⃣3️⃣ San Salvador Church

San Salvador Church Venice

This elegant church is located on the Venice route towards the Rialto Bridge and is a beautiful example of Renaissance Venice.

According to legend, Christ appeared here to Saint Magnus in the 7th century, instructing him to build a church on this site. The current structure dates from the 16th century.

What not to miss:

  • The magnificent marble floor
  • Three large domes that allow light to flood in abundantly
  • Grave monuments of doges

Continue: On the steps as you approach the church, turn onto Calle Larga Mazzini and walk straight to the Grand Canal quay! The Rialto Bridge is on your right and is now easily recognizable by the crowds.

1️⃣4️⃣ Rialto Bridge and Rialto Markets

Rialto Bridge Walking Venice

The Rialto Bridge is one of Venice's most famous icons. It spans the Grand Canal at its narrowest and highest point – hence its name, derived from Rivo Alto (high bank).

The bridge dates back to 1588 and rests on no fewer than 6,000 wooden piles. The arched bridge is 48 meters long – busy with tourists during the day, but once the beating heart of Venetian commerce.

Cross the bridge and, from the steps, turn immediately right. Follow the Grand Canal further and you'll arrive at the Rialto Market – for centuries the place to be for fish, vegetables, herbs, and stories.

Note: This is one of the oldest and liveliest parts of the city, where Venice once began. You'll find delightful bars here where you can enjoy cicchetti with a Spritz or a Pinot Grigio.

After your visit, walk back across the Rialto Bridge where we came from. Turn right to continue the Venice walking route.

Walk along the quay until you reach Calle Cavalli, where you turn left onto Ramo de la Salizzada. Continue straight ahead, also crossing the first square, until you reach the large square "Campo Manin," home to Venice's largest savings bank.

In the middle of this square is a narrow alley you have to walk through until you reach the alley called "Calle Contarini del Bovolo." Be careful not to miss it. It's a quick right, and it feels like you're entering a garden.

1️⃣5️⃣ Scala Contarini del Bovolo – The Snail House of Venice

Bovolo-Venice-Italy-Walking

Amidst the maze of alleyways at Campo Manin, you'll find this striking spiral staircase, built onto the exterior of Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo around 1499 by Giovanni Candi.

'Bovolo' means 'snail' in Venetian, a tribute to its elegant spiral shape.

Follow this link for tickets to the Bovolo Tower >

Why it's worth the detour:
To the top, you'll climb 80+ steps in a circle, after which you can enjoy a view of the rooftops of Venice from the top observation tower (28 meters high).

📍 Extra tip: You can view the main staircase for free from outside, but with a small ticket (€9) you can go up and explore the palazzo. It's worth it for the view.

Continue: Walk back to Campo Manin. There, turn left and cross the small bridge on the left. Continue straight ahead in this busy street until you reach Piazza Sant'Angelo.

It's more pleasant to have a drink in the next square. So cross the square on the right to continue to Chiesa di Santo Stefano. A quick rest on our Venice itinerary.
