VENICE WALKING GUIDE

Grand-Canal-From-Rialto

A walking route straight through Venice.
Past the highlights and far away from the mass tourism!

Venice is a maze of narrow alleyways, hidden squares, and atmospheric little bridges. A city where it’s easy to get lost, and that’s exactly part of its charm! But to save you the time and effort of wandering endlessly, I’ve created the perfect walking route for you.

This Venice walking tour takes you past all the major highlights, but also deep into quiet backstreets where you’ll experience the real Venice.

The route is quite long, so I recommend spreading it over two days. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of spots to take a break, enjoy the atmosphere, and soak it all in.

I’ve done my best to keep the route as logical and smooth as possible, without letting you miss a thing.

And the best part? More than half of the walk leads you through hidden corners you won’t find all over social media! Plus, museums and churches that don’t appear in typical guidebooks but are definitely worth a visit.

A nice bonus, right?

Discover Venice at your own pace, without getting lost!

A helpful companion for your trip is The Venice Pass, a city pass created by Tiqets.

How to get to the starting point?

By train to Venice:
When you exit Venezia Santa Lucia train station, turn left. You’ll immediately find yourself on the first meters of our walking route, and you can start following our description of the Venice walking tour right away.

By bus:
Most city and regional buses stop at Piazzale Roma, the starting point of this walk.

By car or bicycle:
Park at Tronchetto or in one of the parking garages at Piazzale Roma. Cyclists will also find dedicated bicycle parking.

Car parking prices vary, but expect to pay between €28 and €50 per 24 hours, depending on your chosen parking garage.

From the Tronchetto parking area, you can take the People Mover, a driverless monorail that brings you to Piazzale Roma in about 4 minutes. Tickets cost €1.50 per ride and are available from the ticket machines at the station.

By coach:
Most holiday touring coaches park at the Tronchetto parking area, close to the Vaporetto (waterbus) stop. From here, you can take either the People Mover or the Vaporetto to reach Piazzale Roma.

Important update:
Venice applies an entry fee for day-trippers on certain dates. Costs vary between €5 and €10 per day, depending on when you make your reservation. This measure is intended to manage tourism flow and applies on specific days between April and July. Make sure to arrange your entry in advance to avoid unexpected issues.

You’ll find more details about the Venice Entry Fee on our website.

0️⃣ Piazzale Roma – The starting point of your walk

Welcome to Piazzale Roma, the main hub for buses, trams, and cars in Venice. This is where your Venice walking tour adventure begins!

🚶🏻‍♂️ Follow the signs toward the train station

Look for the brown signs with a train symbol 🚆and follow them toward the station. You’ll cross a wide glass pedestrian bridge — the Calatrava Bridge (Ponte della Costituzione). From here on, you leave the cars behind and dive straight into the heart of Venice.

🚻 Need a restroom?
Inside the train station, on platform 1, you’ll find public toilets. Keep in mind you’ll need a €1 coin for access.

Ready to discover Venice?

From here, the real magic begins: atmospheric alleyways, historic bridges, and stunning views at every turn. A unique walking guide to Venice!

Walk in the direction of Rialto, taking the first busy little street on your left with the station on your left-hand side. Continue until you reach the square Campo San Geremia. On the right side of the square, you’ll see the church Santuario di Lucia.

At this square, cross diagonally left into a new narrow alley. Walk straight ahead and over the bridge (Ponte Guglie). Immediately after the bridge, turn left along the waterfront.

Walk a few meters until you find a hidden alley/entrance on the right. This alley is called "CI. Ghetto Vecchio." It's the third "underpass" alley.

Follow it straight until you reach the square Campo di Ghetto Nuovo.
