Planning a holiday to Venice or Italy and thinking about bringing dog to Venice? Venice might be part of your itinerary, perhaps as a stopover on your way to the Dolomites. Everything is starting to come together… until one important question pops up:

Should you bring your dog to Venice, or is it better not to?

It’s a perfectly reasonable concern. Venice sounds beautiful, but it can also be busy, full of stone-paved streets, and perhaps not the most dog-friendly destination.

Still, the reality is a little more nuanced than you might think. In this article, I’ll help you make an honest and practical decision, based on the experiences of other travellers as well as my own insights.

Is Venice Dog-Friendly?

The short answer: yes, Venice is surprisingly dog-friendly.

Here’s what you can expect:

• You’ll see plenty of local dogs around the city.
• Dogs are allowed on the vaporetto (Venice’s water buses). This makes getting around Venice with your dog relatively easy.
• Dogs are often welcome at outdoor cafés and restaurants.
• The water from Venice’s public drinking fountains is safe to drink, which is very convenient when you’re out walking with your dog.

Especially once you get away from the busiest tourist areas, Venice can actually feel surprisingly relaxed and local.

So, can you bring your dog to Venice? Yes, but… that’s not the whole story.

The Reality: What Makes Venice Challenging with a Dog

There are a few things that many travellers underestimate when bringing dog to Venice:

1. Very little green space: Venice is mostly made of stone. Grassy areas are few and far between.

2. Lots of walking and bridges: You can easily walk 10,000–20,000 steps a day, including plenty of stairs and bridges.

3. Crowds at popular sights: Around St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge, it can get extremely busy.

4. Summer heat: Venice’s stone streets and squares retain heat, which can be tough on dogs.

Tip!
Venice can be perfectly manageable with a dog, but you’ll need to adjust the pace of your day.

• Giardini della Biennale (Castello) → grootste en beste optie
• Parco Savorgnan → klein maar fijn park
• Arsenale & Via Garibaldi omgeving → iets meer ruimte en lokaal leven

Verblijf in Castello. Dit is rustiger én dichter bij groen.

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Venice with a Dog?

Many people assume it’s better to stay outside the centre for a bit more peace and quiet. But in my experience, that’s usually not necessary.

Even in central Venice, the city becomes surprisingly quiet in the evening. Venice has very little nightlife compared with other major tourist cities. Most day-trippers leave, the streets empty out and the atmosphere changes completely.

My advice:

• Choose Castello, particularly around Via Garibaldi and the Arsenale. If you’d like a little more space and a quieter atmosphere.
• Alternatively, consider Dorsoduro. This part of Venice feels more spacious and local.

This gives you:

• Peace and quiet
• A central location
• A better balance for your dog

A hotel near San Pietro di Castello can also be a good option, although it is a little further away from the main sights.

Where Should You Park Your Car in Venice?

You can’t take your car into Venice itself, so you’ll need to park at the edge of the city. If you’re travelling to Venice with your dog, choosing a convenient parking garage makes a real difference.

Best option: Garage San Marco

Why?

• Right at the entrance to Venice
• Covered and secure
• Ideal if convenience is your priority

Alternative: Tronchetto, usually a little cheaper, but slightly less convenient.

🎒 Luggage: Should You Take Everything with You at Once?

Yes. Always. Going back to your car takes more time and energy than you might expect.

Tips:

• Use a comfortable, good-quality backpack
• Pack light and travel compact
• Consider using luggage storage if necessary

Getting Around Venice with a Dog

The vaporetto is a great option when travelling around Venice with your dog:

• Less walking
• Connections throughout Venice
• Dogs are allowed on board. Officially, dogs should be kept on a lead and wear a muzzle. In practice, the muzzle rule is not always strictly enforced, although you may occasionally come across a member of staff who does insist on following the rules.

That said, you’ll still spend most of your time exploring Venice on foot with your dog.

Bringing Dog to Venice: Should You or Not? Ultimately, this is the question that really matters.

Bring your dog if:

• You prefer a relaxed pace when travelling
• Your dog is comfortable with crowds and busy surroundings
• You can carry your dog if necessary, for example in a dog backpack
• You’re not visiting in the middle of summer

Consider leaving your dog at home if:

• You plan to spend 8–10 hours sightseeing every day
• Your main goal is to tick off as many highlights as possible
• You’re visiting during very hot weather
• Your dog easily becomes overwhelmed or stressed

Definitely, You Can! Bringing Dog to Venice!

Bringing dog to Venice can work very well if:

• You’re visiting for a short trip and have planned your Venice holiday carefully.
• You’re continuing your journey afterwards, for example to the Dolomites or another part of Italy.

Otherwise, I would personally consider leaving your dog at home.

Not because bringing a dog to Venice isn’t possible, but because:

• Venice can be intense
• You’ll have less flexibility
• Your dog may have fewer opportunities to properly relax

And to be fair… you may enjoy Venice just a little more without having that extra responsibility.

Combine Venice with the Dolomites

Heading to the Dolomites afterwards? That’s where travelling with your dog really comes into its own:

• Nature
• Peace and quiet
• Plenty of space
• Long walks

It’s a great combination. Bringing dog to Venice is absolutely possible and can be surprisingly enjoyable.

But it does require:

• Good preparation
• Smart choices
• Realistic expectations
